What Cookies Are
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store on your device. When you return, the browser sends the cookie back, which lets the site recognise the browser and remember things about the session. Cookies set by the site you are visiting are called first-party cookies. Cookies set by another company whose code the page loads, such as an advertising network, are third-party cookies.
Alongside cookies, sites use related technologies that work in similar ways:
- Local storage. A larger, longer-lived storage area in your browser. Unlike a cookie, it is not automatically transmitted to a server with each request. This site uses it to remember which stores you have marked as visited.
- Session storage. The same idea, but cleared as soon as you close the tab.
- Pixels and web beacons. Tiny invisible images or scripts that register that a page or advertisement was loaded. Advertising and analytics services use these for measurement.

Why This Site Uses Them
We use cookies and similar technologies for four reasons: to make the site work at all, to remember your own preferences on your device, to understand in aggregate which parts of the site are useful, and to serve the advertising that pays for the site to exist.

These are required for the site to load, to remain secure, and to honour your privacy choices. They cannot be switched off through our consent controls, because without them the site would not function correctly. They do not track you across other websites.

2. Functional and Preference Storage
This category covers the browser local storage that powers features you actively choose to use:
- Visited store tracking. Ticking the “visited” box on a store card writes that store’s identifier to local storage. This is what drives your progress badge and the Buc-ee’s Passport view.
- Map and filter preferences. Your chosen filters, corridor selection, and distance radius may be remembered so the map opens the way you left it.
This data stays on your device. It is not sent to our servers, it is not readable by us, and it does not synchronise between your phone and your laptop. Clearing your browser’s site data for this domain erases it, including your visited-store progress, which cannot be recovered.
3. Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used in aggregate: which pages are read, which search terms bring people here, roughly which country traffic comes from, and whether features like the trip planner are actually used. This tells us which parts of the directory to expand and which guides to rewrite.
Google Analytics sets cookies containing a randomly generated client identifier. These typically persist for up to two years for the main identifier and a matter of minutes for request-throttling cookies. We do not enable cross-device tracking through Google Signals, and we never upload names, email addresses, or other identifying data to Analytics.
Where consent is legally required, these cookies are set only after you agree. Declining them does not change how the site works for you.
4. Advertising
This site is free and is funded by display advertising served through Google AdSense. Google and its certified advertising partners set cookies to select which advertisements to show, to limit how often you see the same advertisement, to detect invalid traffic and click fraud, and to measure whether advertising campaigns performed.

Advertising cookies typically persist for up to two years, depending on the vendor. If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, Google’s EU User Consent Policy applies and personalised advertising cookies are set only with your consent. If you decline, you will still see advertisements, but they will be contextual rather than based on your browsing history.
5. Third-Party Content Embedded on the Page
The interactive map is built with Leaflet and loads its background tiles from CARTO using OpenStreetMap data. Requesting those tiles necessarily reveals your IP address to the tile provider, and the provider may set its own cookies. We do not control that and cannot access whatever it collects.
Similarly, the Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze buttons on each store card hand you off to those services when pressed. From that moment their own cookie and privacy policies apply.
How to Control Cookies
Through Our Consent Controls
Where the law requires consent, a banner appears on your first visit letting you accept or reject non-essential categories. Your choice is stored so you are not asked repeatedly, and you can change it at any time by clearing this site’s cookies, which brings the banner back.
Through Your Browser
Every major browser lets you view, block, and delete cookies, and most let you block third-party cookies specifically while allowing first-party ones. The relevant settings are usually found under Privacy and Security:

- Safari: Settings, Privacy, Manage Website Data and Prevent cross-site tracking
- Firefox: Settings, Privacy and Security, Enhanced Tracking Protection

Blocking all cookies will break parts of this site and many others. Blocking third-party cookies only will stop most advertising and cross-site tracking while leaving core functionality intact.
Through Industry Opt-Outs
The Digital Advertising Alliance, the Network Advertising Initiative, and the European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance all run consumer opt-out pages that cover many advertising vendors at once. Note that these opt-outs are themselves stored as cookies, so clearing your cookies also clears the opt-out.
Through Analytics Opt-Out

Through Global Privacy Control
Some browsers and extensions can transmit a Global Privacy Control signal, which is legally recognised as an opt-out request in California and several other US states. We honour that signal where our consent tooling supports it.
What Happens If You Refuse Cookies
Strictly necessary cookies aside, refusing cookies has limited consequences here. The map, directory, search, and trip planner all continue to work. You will still see advertising, but it will be contextual rather than personalised. The main thing you lose is the visited-store tracker, which depends on local storage being available.
Changes to This Policy
We will update this policy when we add or remove a service that sets cookies, or when the law changes what we must disclose. The date at the top reflects the current version. Material changes will be flagged on the site.
