Was Murfreesboro Buc-ee’s supposed to be the world’s largest?
Originally, yes. Early 2025 plans called for a 76,245 sq ft store, which would have surpassed both Sevierville TN (74,000) and the New Braunfels TX historical flagship. But when Luling TX reopened at 75,593 sq ft in June 2024, Buc-ee’s scaled Murfreesboro back to the standard 74,000 sq ft flagship size.
The Bottom Line
Buc-ee’s Murfreesboro is genuinely close, not “years away” like Ocala or New Kent VA. The exterior is essentially complete. The pump islands are being fitted out. Hiring events are already scheduled for September and October. The specific date most likely to hit is November 16, 2026, though December 2026 is a realistic fallback if any late-stage issues emerge.
My honest suggestions:
- Live in Murfreesboro, Smyrna, La Vergne, or Lebanon? This is your local Buc-ee’s, 10-25 minutes away. Treat it like a routine grocery run once it opens.
- Live in Nashville? 40 minutes southeast on I-24. Cuts your drive to a Buc-ee’s roughly in half compared to Smiths Grove KY.
- Live in Franklin, Brentwood, or Cool Springs? 35-45 minutes east via I-840 or through Nashville. A legitimate day trip destination.
- Live in Clarksville? Murfreesboro is 85 miles southeast. Smiths Grove KY (65 miles northeast) may still be more convenient.
- Live in Chattanooga? Sorry, Crossville is still your closest at 70 miles east. Murfreesboro is 100 miles northwest and no help for you.
- Driving I-24 between Nashville and Atlanta/Chattanooga? This will be your default I-24 stop starting November 2026.
Three things I’ll be watching between now and the opening:
- The September 29 to October 1, 2026 hiring event. If it happens on schedule and draws a full applicant pool, we’re on track for November 16 opening.
- Interior buildout progress in October 2026. By mid-October, all fixtures, coolers, and merchandise displays need to be in place for late-November opening.
- Any official announcement of the specific opening date. Buc-ee’s typically confirms the exact opening date 4-6 weeks in advance. Watch for a mid-October announcement.
